Historic Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs was founded in 1870 and will celebrate its 138 birthday this Sunday at 10 a.m. The service will be led by two outstanding preachers: the Reverends John Schule and James Kidd. The chapel is known for its equally outstanding music led by organist/director Garrett Brown, a quartet consisting of Helen Jennings, soprano, Martha Hudson, alto, Kevin Ryan, tenor, and Brad Austin, bass. Also participating in this particular service will be guest soloist Lisa Umberger (pictured above) who will perform two of her original pieces.

Lisa Umberger was born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. She is classically trained and has sung everything from bluegrass to opera. Her first professional performance was at age 13, singing and playing the autoharp, with the Senior Citizens Band where the next youngest member was age 82.

She was commissioned to write and perform an original composition for former President Gerald R. Ford. She currently resides in the Vineyard and Boca Grande, Fla.

The non-denominational Chapel is located at the upper end of Circuit Avenue and welcomes visitors of all faiths. Music commences at 9:40 a.m. and the service at 10 a.m. Summer attire is acceptable.
