The Vineyard Haven Library Evening Lecture Series continues its summer author program on Tuesday, August 19, at 7 p.m. with Vineyard artist Edward (Ted) Hewett speaking about cartooning. He will discuss work from his new book, Extreme Birding, a collection of cartoons published in June by Westmeadow Press of Martha’s Vineyard.

Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer calls Extreme Birding “low-key, charming and civilized, and Cynthia Riggs, the mystery writer and editor of Martha’s Vineyard Writing, says Mr. Hewett’s cartoons “rank with the best of The New Yorker’s.” His cartoons depicting Island issues are particularly resonant.

Perhaps best known around the Island for his painted toy chests and for his murals in the Vineyard Haven and Chilmark public libraries, Mr. Hewett has lived on the Vineyard for 35 years, and is a former professor of art.

He is also the co-author of Spring Poems and Convivial Dickens, and is working on a book of translations of French women poets of the early 20th century.

Books will be available for purchase and for Mr. Hewett to autograph after his talk.
