The 1929 Oak Bluffs fire truck Engine number 2 is coming home. A group of Oak Bluffs firemen and friends have raised the necessary $10,000 to purchase the vehicle, Donald Billings announced yesterday.

Mr. Billings said the group plans to bring the truck back to the Vineyard sometime in September.

The truck is now in Milton, though it has also lived in a number of places across New England. Mr. Billings describes the truck as mint condition. The truck has not been in Oak Bluffs since it was sold and taken away in 1956.

“People have been very generous,” Mr. Billings said of the support. He and William (Bill) Norton, both retired from the Oak Bluffs fire department, began raising funds for the fire truck a month ago, after securing a good price from the seller, Bob Dipoli, a retired Needham fire chief.

Now the attention shifts to raising money for a fire station to house the truck next to the Nelson W. Amaral fire station on the corner of Wing and County Roads.

“We found when we were out collecting donations that a lot of people have memorabilia of the Oak Bluffs fire department,” Mr. Billings said. “They have pictures. They have old badges from family members. People have offered to donate their items once we build the fire station.”

Materials for the new fire station will cost $25,000. Construction will be done by volunteers. “We want it to be a little museum,” Mr. Billings said.

He said the plans for the station are being circulated around town.

Contributions may be made to the Town of Oak Bluffs, with a notation for the Fire Department Restoration Fund on the check. Checks may be mailed to Mr. Billings care of P.O. Box 143, Oak Bluffs MA 02557.

Mr. Billings is keeping a complete list of contributors to the project.
