August 12 is Native American Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as proclaimed on numerous occasions by sitting governors.

All the best to Jim Kinsella as he moves on to his new position at Cape Cod Today. He has been an inspiration in assisting me with editing my column for the past two years. We will undoubtedly continue to work together as Cape Cod Today on occasion quotes some of my work.

The Rev. Roger H. Spinney will be hosting a pulled pork dinner on Saturday, August 9 at First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven. Dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. and will include corn bread, cole slaw, and other treats. Tickets are available at the door and are $12 for adults and $7 for children — all you can eat.

Earlier this week at the Aquinnah Cultural Center, Gladys A. Widdiss presented her pottery demonstration. Today, August 8 from 5 to 7 p.m., author Arlene Hirschfelder will present From Aquinnah to Unalaska: Indian Country Today. She has written 18 non-fiction books on Native Americans.

On Saturday, August 9, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. the annual fundraiser with a traditional feast will be prepared. Tickets are $100 per plate. On Wednesday, August 13, the bay scallop project will be presented from 1 to 3 p.m.

Congratulations and all the best to Michael Kistner and Margaret Mills as they are married this evening on the beach on Oak Island in North Carolina. They will be married in the presence of 40 of their closest family and friends who have enjoyed the entire week together on the beach. Michael is the son of Bill and Joan Kistner of Poughkeepsie and brother of Theresa Manning of Aquinnah.

Amalia Lieberman, daughter of Joshua Lieberman and Marcia Okun of Aquinnah and Newton, is working at the Hatmarcha Shop with Martha Vanderhoop and Marshall Lee for the summer. Amalia is also the granddaughter of Barbara Okun. She is a student at Walnut Hill School where she excels in playing the viola.

John Patton, his wife Lisa and their three children are at their home on Moshup Trail for the season. It was a pleasure meeting John after 12 years of their residence in Aquinnah.

Happy 30th anniversary wishes to Judith Manning Milavsky and her husband Barry as they celebrate their special day on August 11.

Belated happy birthday wishes to Aquinnah assistant assessor Angela Cywinski who celebrated her special day on August 1.

Happy birthday wishes today to Henry Widdiss who has recently returned to his home after a brief hospitalization.

Bettina Malonson Washington will be celebrating her birthday on August 12.
