The Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center Summer Institute opens its summer season of films and lectures on Sunday, when noted film critic Miguel Valente will introduce the first film, a heart-felt story about political events as felt in Brazil in 1970. The film is called The Year My Parents Went on Vacation.

Filmed in Brazil and directed by Cao Hamburger, it is subtitled.

The film is offered by the Boston Jewish Film Festival; its summary of the film reads: “A 12-year-old boy comes under the care of an elderly Jewish man when his parents ‘go on vacation’ — a euphemism for going into hiding.”

The Year My Parents Went on Vacation screens Sunday June 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center on Centre street in Vineyard Haven. Suggested admission is $10. All are welcome, and refreshments will be served. For details, call 508 693-0745.
