Well, here we go. Today is the first day of summer and the last day of school for many schools in this state. Let the games begin. The roadsides are looking lush and green with many flowering plants in full bloom. The daisies rule the pastures and the farmers are trying to get the hay in between showers. The bluefish are biting and the lifeguards are on duty . . . what else do we need to make a perfect Chilmark summer?
Welcome to the newest Chilmarker. Maeve Martin was born to Caitlin Cook and Calder Martin on June 17 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Her proud grandparents are Peter and Sally Cook and George and Beverly Martin. The senior Martins are here from Seattle for a visit with Maeve and her family at their South Road home. Cheers from us all.
Congratulations to Emily Rothschild who graduated in May from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence with a master’s degree in industrial design, with honors and additional special awards. She will be opening a studio in Fall River in collaboration with her school and classmates. Emily is the daughter of Dr. Ed Rothschild of Chilmark and City Island.
Alan and Sue Parkes are at their South Road home for the summer after a winter in Arizona.
Jack Huberman of Santa Fe is spending some time at his Menemsha home. His wife, Nina, will join him this week.
Donald and Susan Luce of Downingtown, Pa., are at their home on Chowder Kettle Lane and are enjoying a visit from Donald’s mother, Jean Luce, of Marion. Don’s nephew, Herb Andrews and his bride, Karen, of Atlanta are also visiting this week.
The annual summer reading program for children will begin with a sign up on Monday, June 30, at the library where the participants will be given reading logs and coupons of appreciation from local merchants. The kick-off for the program will be a performance by Bill Ross of Screaming with Pleasure Productions. It is a juggling act that will be performed on Saturday, July 5, at 11 a.m. at the agricultural hall in West Tisbury.
Dan VanLandingham of West Tisbury is showing his oil seascapes at the Chilmark library. His show will close July 3.
Conrad and Jane Neumann have come from Durham, N.C., to their Chilmark home. Their granddaughter, Christina, has accompanied them and will stay for several weeks.
Mark your calendars for several flea markets coming up. The first Chilmark Community Church flea market will be in the West Tisbury School parking lot on Wednesday, June 25 and again on Saturday, June 28. There will also be a benefit flea market for Hospice in Oak Bluffs on June 28 in Waban Park from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard is still renting spaces to families and commercial vendors. Ecologist Luanne Johnson will share what she has learned about coastal skunks on the Vineyard at the Chilmark library’s Wednesday afternoon program on June 25 at 5:30 p.m. The title of her talk is, They Came While We Slept.
The Menemsha Fisheries Development Fund is scheduling a lecture by Dr. Andrew Rosenberg, a professor at the University of New Hampshire on Thursday, June 26 at 5 p.m. He will discuss the future of fisheries and more. The public is invited free of charge.
The library offers programs two afternoons each week all summer. The Wednesday programs begin at 5:30 p.m. and the Thursday programs begin at 5 p.m. All are open to the public at no charge.
