Nancy Noble Gardner calls her solo photography show opening this weekend at Featherstone Center for the Arts an honor: “I‘m excited by the total freedom I was given, and I chose photographs which are most significant to me, creating a retrospective.”

The opening reception for this exhibition will be on Sunday, June 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the gallery on Barnes Road near the blinker in Oak Bluffs.

Ms. Gardner studied photography at Clark University and the Worcester Art Museum School in the late 1960s. She earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Pratt Insitute, then took a 30-year hiatus from photography before returning to the medium.

“I’m always looking at what is beautiful and how to communicate that visually,” the photographer said. “This year I took some photographs of young children on a beach. They had a universal sense of wonder and joy.”

She is intrigued by water, rocks, sand and the moon. “I’m very attracted to nature, especially Vineyard seashells and flowers,” she said. “Vineyarders will see elements of Island beauty close up, hopefully in a new and refreshing way. They’ll also see what I’ve fallen in love with in Greece; icons, sculpture, architecture and seascapes.”

Ms. Gardner has been a seasonal resident of the Vineyard for more than half a century. She has been juried at the Vineyard Artisans’ Festival and won awards at the All-Island Art Show. She also has exhibited in Greece, in Massachusetts on Cape Cod and the Berkshires, and in New York in Albany, Troy and Saratoga. Her work has been featured in the Washington Post, Vineyard Style, Cape Cod Life and Odyssey magazines.

The show hangs from June 8 to 18, with gallery hours noon to 4 p.m. daily. For details, call 508-693-1850 or see online featherstonearts.org.
