A Maine resident was seriously injured Saturday after he drove his vehicle off Herring Creek Road at high speed and flipped twice before coming to rest in a field near South Beach.

Dustin Gilbert, 22, of Lewiston, Me., was transported by ambulance to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital to be treated for head and neck injuries. Edgartown police Sgt. Kenneth Johnson said Mr. Gilbert will be charged with negligent operation, speeding and a marked lanes violation.

Mr. Gilbert was reportedly driving his 1993 Toyota Corolla at an excessive rate of speed along Herring Creek Road at around 10:30 p.m. when he lost control while negotiating a tight curve near the end of the Katama air park runway. Sergeant Johnson said that stretch of roadway has been the scene of several accidents in recent years.

“I think some drivers see the ocean and don’t pay attention to the curve . . . the evidence indicates this driver [Mr. Gilbert] was moving at a pretty good clip when he lost control,” he said.
