After two successful benefit wine dinners for The Yard artists-in-the-schools program at The Sweet Life Café Oak Bluffs, owners Susan and Pierre Guerin are going bubbly, announcing an evening featuring Champagne from the world-renowned house of Veuve Clicquot, on Wednesday, May 14, at 6 p.m.

An aperitif and hors d’oeuvres will be followed by a four-course menu specially prepared to showcase the Champagnes. Winemaker Cyril Brun will be on hand to guide guests through a tasting of five different champagnes.

Founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot, Veuve Clicquot played an important role in establishing Champagne as the beverage of choice of European nobility and the wealthy bourgeoisie. Since its inception, Veuve Clicquot has been a specialist in Champagnes based on Pinot Noir, especially Rosé. In 1805, when the son of the founder passed away, leaving his wife a widow at the age of 27, Veuve Clicquot (‘veuve’ means widow in French) took over her husband’s business, which was unheard-of in that day. In 1810, the house took the name Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin. The way that she ran her company, from risky overseas ventures to startling technological innovations, changed Champagne forever.

The five champagne that will be tasted are: Yellow Label, Rosé, Vintage 1999, Rare Vintage 1988, and Demi-Sec.

The prix fixe menu including Champagnes for this evening to support The Yard is $125 per person, plus tax and gratuity.
