A woman sustained serious injuries last Friday after a motorist pulling out of a parking space in front of Reliable Market accidentally put her car in drive and lurched forward, pinning her against the side of the building and reportedly breaking her leg.

According to Oak Bluffs police, Ellen N. Kendrick, 89, a seasonal resident of Edgartown with a Florida address, thought she had put the car in reverse but had actually put the car in drive. The vehicle reportedly jumped the curb and struck a 30-year-old New York woman who was walking along the sidewalk.

The victim, who was not identified by police, was taken by ambulance to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital to be treated for leg and abdominal injuries.

Oak Bluffs Lieut. Timothy Williamson said no charges have been filed, although the state registry of motor vehicles is reviewing the matter to determine whether Ms. Kendrick should keep her driver’s license.

In other police news, West Tisbury police had to help round up a runaway herd of cows early Tuesday morning after the bothersome bovines backed up traffic on Middle Road. Sgt. Dan Rossi on Wednesday said animal control officer Joan Jenkinson deftly and quickly rounded up the herd, which consisted of three milking cows, and safely returned them to their pasture.

No injuries were reported, and traffic was backed up only briefly.
