Three Island teenagers who reportedly stole a car from the Tisbury Park and Ride for a late-night joy ride were apprehended by Edgartown police following a high-speed pursuit in Katama early Saturday morning that ended when their vehicle collided with a police cruiser on Clevelandtown Road.

The driver, 17-year-old Brett Geddis of Vineyard Haven, was charged with felony larceny of a motor vehicle, use of a motor vehicle without permission, speeding, marked lane violation, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of an accident after causing property damage.

The two other teens involved, both 15-year-old males, were charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Because they are juveniles their names were not released.

Edgartown police later linked the three teens with a series of home and motor vehicle break-ins off Mashacket Road last week and charged them with breaking and entering during the daytime and multiple counts of breaking and entering into a motor vehicle.

Edgartown police first spotted the stolen 2000 Jeep Cherokee weaving erratically in front of the police station on Pease’s Point Way around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Officer William Oteri began to pursue the vehicle and activated his cruiser lights. The Cherokee did not pull over, and accelerated to a high speed before slowing down near the intersection of Schoolhouse Road.

Police said the driver and two passengers then jumped out of the vehicle and ran into a nearby wooded area. Meanwhile, the Cherokee, which was still in gear, continued moving forward with no driver and collided with a cruiser driven by officer Michael Snowden, who had been called for backup.

Both officers pursued the suspects on foot and caught up with Mr. Geddis near Clevelandtown Road. Although the two other teens initially evaded capture, police learned their identity and picked them up the next day.

During questioning, police were able to tie the three teens to a series of break-ins at the Brewer Tree & Land Co. offices on Clevelandtown Road that occurred earlier the week. Police said someone had broken into a storage shed and several motor vehicles, although nothing was stolen. The three teens confessed to committing the break-ins.

Edgartown police also arrested a New Hampshire woman last Thursday after she reportedly broke into a number of motor vehicles parked along Beach Road. An eyewitness first alerted police that an intoxicated female, later identified as 36-year-old Kelly Turner of Glen, N.H., was going in and out of vehicles and stumbling around.

When police arrived, the reporting party told police the woman was highly intoxicated and one eyewitness was worried for her safety. Police found Ms. Turner and initially placed her into protective custody. Then they found that she was carrying a stolen credit card, apparently taken from one of the vehicles parked along Beach Road. She was charged with two counts of breaking and entering in a motor vehicle, larceny and possession of a stolen credit card.
