Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks this week ignited its furnace for another season, to “charge” (melt) the first pot of glass for 2008.

The Glassworks was closed to the public over winter to undertake renovations of the upstairs gallery and energy efficiency improvements on the production floor.

Visitors are welcome to watch, learn and appreciate the age-old art of hot glass in a contemporary environment. The glassworks will be open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks is an Island business of 15 years. This year there will be two senior glass blowers, Mark Weiner and Robert Phillips, working, as well as returning journeymen Michiko Maekawa and Jesse Rasid.

The glassworks also will be a part of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston’s annual Art in Bloom exhibition, from Saturday, April 26, through Tuesday, April 29. This is a festival of art and fresh flowers; objects are selected from the museum’s collections and interpreted in flowers by 62 New England garden clubs. Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks will be featured in the garden gallery, exhibiting and selling hand-blown glass bowls, vases and pumpkins.
