The sun is shining, the temperature is rising and the hope of spring is getting nearer and nearer. With the warm temperatures, my daffodils burst open yesterday and it is so refreshing to see them blooming.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Sara Creato who celebrated her day on March 29 and Kylie Hatt and Jaclynn Trapp who celebrated their day on March 30.

Special wishes go out to Jim Kresel who celebrated his day on March 30 and to Ellie and Caroline Dolby’s grandfather who celebrated his day on March 31.

People are getting ready for the busy season. The Navigator seems to be moving along. I have seen mannequins being moved around in some stores.

I was looking for an Island present for some friends and Ralph told me to look in the Edgartown Scrimshaw Gallery and see what Tom Dumont had. He said he saw some things that they might like. He was so right. Tom has some prints of the Island highlights, like the Islander, the Shenandoah, and all the lighthouses. In the background is the map of where these items are located. It is very well done and the price is very reasonable and they are great gifts. Tom is waiting for another shipment and I can’t wait to see what comes in.

My sister in law Lela Gilkes and I have been going off Island every week for my doctor’s appointment dealing with my knees. We do our shopping and fill the car and it has been great spending time with her. We love watching the people on the boat and the comings and goings of everyone. But our treat was last week when we noticed that there was a pigeon on the sprinkler system below deck. We watched it as the boat loaded and got ready to go. The bird never moved and when the doors started to close we were convinced that it would fly off, but no — another pigeon flew in and perched above the door. They rode across to Woods Hole and when the doors opened they waited for the appropriate time and flew out.

Now this left us wondering. Did they have a ticket? Were they Island pigeons visiting family in Woods Hole? Or were they just too lazy to fly home? And the final question: did they leave any presents on the cars below them? It was an amusing ride and showed how much time we had on our hands.

Our sympathies go out to the Viera family for the loss of their son Benny. I worked with Joyce and Janice at the old A& P and remember all their small children. I hope it is some comfort to know that we all share your sorrow and we are here for you.

The other morning we were relaxing when we heard the noise. It was the flicker. He is back in town and I don’t know whose metal chimney he was beating but you could hear him. I have to say it is very comical to think that this poor bird is beating his beak on something he will never get through, but I’m sure the occupants of the house didn’t find it so comical at 6 a.m.

Speaking of voting, town meeting is Tuesday at the Whaling Church. It would be great for all to attend. The town election is Thursday.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
