Martha Stewart Living radio will feature Elizabeth Germain today discussing Community Supported Agriculture. The broadcast is Friday, March 14, from 2:30 to 3 p.m. on Sirius Satellite radio, the Living Today Show. Tune in to learn about the history of CSA programs, the benefits of being a shareholder, and the similarities and differences between projects around our country.

Ms. Germain will discuss her experiences in founding the CSA at Stearns Farm in Framingham as well as her experiences as a shareholder of the Whippoorwill Farm CSA here on Martha’s Vineyard.

In a CSA such as Whippoorwill Farm, community members — in this case 300 shareholders — join together to support a local farmer and purchase a share in the harvest.

Ms. Germain fell in love with this sustainable farming model in the early 1990s while farming at Stearns Organic Farm. She facilitated the formation of the program at Stearns Farm in 1991-1992 with guidance from Robyn Van En, pioneer of the CSA movement in the U.S.; this CSA thrives today.

“I’ve seen the incredibly positive impact CSAs have on adults and especially children,” Ms. Germain said. “I receive a share of the Whippoorwill Farm harvest each week from June through December and pick a gorgeous bouquet of flowers throughout the growing season. I’m still eating root vegetables and winter squash, reveling in their flavor and the local vibe,” says Ms. Germain.

Year-round Vineyarder Ms. Germain has advocated for local, sustainable food and empowered others to cook and eat for wellbeing for two decades.
