Pastry chef Kate Rickard will conduct a free bread making workshop at the Chilmark Public Library on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 5:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to mix, knead, rise and shape a variety of different bread types, as well as taste samples of Mrs. Rickard’s products.

She owns Rickard Bread Co. with her husband, Gates Rickard. The pair met while students at the acclaimed culinary school Johnson & Wales University in Providence. After graduating, the baking duo traveled to Europe and trained in Belgium, Switzerland and England before landing back in the U.S. Mr. Rickard was pastry chef at the Boston dining institution Maison Robert and Mrs. Rickard worked at High street’s Radius.

With a growing family, the couple to the Vineyard in 2004. Gates Rickard has worked as pastry chef at several Island restaurants and presently does the baking for Slice of Life in Oak Bluffs.

A year ago they launched the Rickard Bread Company to bring world-class artisan bread to the Vineyard. Rickard Bread is currently available at Cronigs Market. The company is expanding into a 3,200-square-foot wholesale facility in Edgartown and plans to provide bread, pastries, wedding cakes and chocolates to additional groceries, restaurants and caterers this spring.

The workshop is sponsored by the Friends of the Chilmark Public Library. Admission is free and all are welcome.
