Some of you have called to tell me your e-mails to me are bouncing back. The reason seems to be that you are omitting the second “v” — my address is short for Vineyard Haven, Vineyard Gazette! Don’t forget that second “v” — it’s been a very slow news week.

Bill and Deb Little returned from a 12-day ocean cruise. They had a terrific time. They embarked from Bayonne, N.J., and stopped in St. Maarten, Antigua, Dominica, Barbados, St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico they visited a beautiful horse farm and spent two hours riding these magnificent creatures. The weather was fabulous except for the day of the ship’s return to Bayonne. They caught the tail end of our big storm last week and experienced winds of 90 miles per hour and 30-foot seas. Otherwise, everything was perfect and they were happy to get home to Max and Angelique, their two lhasos who were perfectly behaved in their absence. Welcome home.

Wiet Bacheller, vice president of our Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club, has put out the word that this fine group, started more than 130 years ago, is happy to accept new members. The club meets at the historic Old Mill building in West Tisbury in the summer and at the Wakeman Center in Vineyard Haven in the winter months. Members have the opportunity to get involved in Islandwide special projects, enjoy interesting lectures, and participate in propagating cuttings and seedlings in the greenhouse at the Wakeman Center. The topic for the March meeting will be Sustainable Gardening by Paul Mahoney. If you are interested in joining or would like more information, please call Wiet at 508-693-0927.

Our League of Women Voters will hold a board and committee meeting on Saturday, March 1 at 8:30 a.m. at the Howes House. Our group is always looking for new members, and it’s so important in this big election year.

The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society precedes its Oscar Night Gala with a movie tomorrow night at the Katharine Cornell Theatre. Doors open at 7 p.m., the movie starts at 7:30 p.m. Starting Out in the Evening is based on Brian Morton’s novel. It stars the inimitable Frank Langella as a successful but crusty writer. If you need tickets or more information about the Oscar party on Sunday, check out mvfilmsociety.com.

The birthday bandwagon today honors the father of our country, George Washington. Tomorrow is shared by David Gardella and Reid MacPherson. Feb. 25 is claimed by Rosie Piccione. Feb. 26 shines for Natalia Oliveira. And on Feb. 27 Ryann Gold, Steve Bradley, George Giosmas and Rafaela DeOliveira take the cake. Many happy returns.
