Happy New Year to one and all. So many of us are starting the year with this exasperating virus that has been going around, but spring is just around the corner. May this be a year of good health, happiness and prosperity.

Cheryl Andrews-Maltais was sworn in as tribal council chairman on Jan. 5 in the presence of her parents Joseph and Edith Andrews, her husband Daniel Maltais, and their daughter Samantha.

At the swearing in ceremony, tribal council secretary Eleanor Hebert, and tribal council members Naomi Carney and Durwood Vanderhoop also were sworn in by Chief Ryan Malonson.

Gary Coates Jr. returned recently after a brief trip to Fayetteville, Ga., to visit with his father Gary Coates Sr. Gary Jr. was then planning a trip to Las Vegas to welcome in the New Year.

Aquinnah Fire Chief Walter E. Delaney and his wife Nancy spent the holiday with their daughter Gayle, her husband Andrew Dineen and grandson Raymond.

Condolences to the family of Tenney Lehman, who died this week in Cambridge. Tenney and her late husband the Rev. Thomas Lehman were a wonderful part of our community over the past 50 years as they enjoyed their home at Pancake Hollow.

Condolences also to Charles P. Madison and his family in the death of his wife Kassaundra. They always looked forward to their annual autumn vacations in Aquinnah, usually staying at the Galbraith home and this past September staying on Beach Plum Way. Kassaundra thoroughly enjoyed Aquinnah with her husband Charles on his visits with his extended family.

Chief Medicine Man Luther T. Madison and his wife Anne entertained family and friends at their annual Christmas Day open house. They enjoyed a visit from his brother in law Edmund Silva, who journeyed from Oak Bluffs.

Noah James Manning spent Christmas in New York with his grandparents Bill and Joan Kistner and their side of his extended family. He had a day full of gifts and showing his grandparents Bill and Joan all of his new accomplishments at 18 months of age. Noah was accompanied by his parents Paul and Theresa and his brother Chris.

Condolences to the family of Robert T. Morgan who has been a family friend for more than half a century. He spent a lot of time with our Manning and Noble families in what was once Gay Head. Bob’s kindness and consideration has been shown to not only our family but to so many across the Vineyard for years. He has left a large void in our Vineyard community for the fine work he accomplished all around.

Condolences to the family and friends of Joseph Nunes who died Tuesday at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Joe and his friend Kay Manning have been family friends for years and neighbors in Oak Bluffs. Joe was always the greatest presence at the Holy Ghost Society which was a great part of his life and a source of enjoyment for him.

Arlen Roth returned home this past week after time on the road promoting his new album. Arlen and his daughter Lexie enjoyed the holiday with his wife Maria and extended family.

James Shepherd arrived home from Anchorage, Alas., in time to spend the holiday with Faith Vanderhoop and their daughter Billie Diamond.

Capt. Hugh Taylor and his wife Jeanne returned to the Caribbean this week after spending the past few weeks at their Outermost Inn. They especially enjoyed Christmas with their twin granddaughters Olive and Violet and sharing in their second birthday on Dec. 30.

Naushon Vanderhoop arrived on Christmas Eve to spend the holiday with her family and friends and to celebrate her birthday on Dec. 26.

Vern and Berta Welch and their children Giles and Sophia entertained with their annual open house, their home full to the brim. By all accounts it was a great success as always.

Jerry Wiener, his wife Carolyn Feltz and their son Jesse returned home this week after spending the holiday with her parents in New Jersey.

The last day to register to vote for this meeting is Feb. 2.

Happy birthday wishes to Donald A. Widdiss, who celebrated Jan. 2 and to Evelyn Vanderhoop, Christopher Fischer and Matthew Scott on Jan. 3. Stephen P. Silvia partied on Jan. 4. Alexander James Milavsky celebrated his 21st birthday in Naples, Fla. Francis Brown partied on Jan. 5, Megan Ottens and Kaitlyn Joy Vanderhoop on Jan. 6, Eloise LeBovit Jan. 7. Gloria Fisk parties today, and shares the day with her son in law Michael F. Sellitti who turns the big 4-0. Gordon C. Perry, Pesto Pam Glavin, Priscilla Belain and Caleb Hallett celebrate Jan. 12.

Genevieve Rogers will be 92 on Jan. 13 and will be receiving a wonderful gift that will connect her with all of her children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren.

Edie Baker, the friendly smiling face at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital switchboard, has her birthday Jan. 13.

Faith Vanderhoop and Carol Mayrand will party on Jan. 15. Chester Cook and Derrick Mays celebrate Jan. 16.
