Club Slates Black Powder

Shoot for This Sunday

The Martha’s Vineyard Rod & Gun Club’s annual Black Powder Shoot will be held Sunday, Dec. 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the day before the primitive firearm deer season opens on the Island.

The club invites the public to participate. The club is off the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road at 3rd street in Edgartown.

This muzzle-loading marksmanship competition gives all Island black powder shooters an opportunity to sight in their ancient guns and hone their shooting skills before going out into the field. The competitive events involve loading, shooting and reloading for accuracy and points.

A small entry fee will be charged for the event. Competitors will vie for turkeys and hams that have been donated by Stop & Shop and Cronig’s markets. The club invites spouses and children to enjoy the day’s action for free.

This year is the club’s eighth annual Black Powder Championship. A Black Powder Champion’s trophy will be awarded to the winner and his or her name will be engraved on the new Black Powder clubhouse perpetual plaque.
