The Oak Bluffs Police Department will host its first Citizen’s Police Academy from late November through January. The academy will give Oak Bluffs residents the opportunity to observe the daily operations of their police department.

Officers will conduct training in their areas of expertise, allowing participants a practical view of policing and its complexity.

Discussion topics will include constitutional law, criminal law, motor vehicle law, firearms, domestic violence, marine operations and community policing. An optional cruiser ride-along, optional practical exercise at the firearms range, and an optional marine patrol operations exercise will be offered.

Interested applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have an inquisitive nature and be willing to spend eight weeks getting acquainted with department officers.

The academy will begin on Thursday, Nov. 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The academy will run every Thursday night (excluding Dec. 27) from Nov. 29 through Jan. 31. Classes will be held at the police station training room.

Those interested in attending the academy should get in touch with Sgt. Michael Marchand at 508-693-0750. Informational brochures, academy applications and liability waiver applications may be picked up at the police department during normal business hours (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Monday through Friday. Completed applications are due by 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16.
