The Federated Church of Edgartown is sending volunteers on a 10-day mission to New Orleans in November to continue the rebuilding work the church youth group began last December.

With the passing of the second anniversary of Katrina, and with so much left incomplete, inadequate, or non-existent in this still-ravaged area, the volunteers feel called to lend additional physical, emotional and spiritual support.

The group will be helping a 63-year-old widow get out of her FEMA trailer and back in her home by repairing the hole in her roof (from a tree that fell through it in the storm) and helping to rebuild the interior of her completely flooded and now gutted home. The homeowner is providing materials; the volunteer crew is providing the tools, labor and enthusiasm.

The homeowner herself is doing an invaluable post-Katrina service in her job as a social worker assisting youth ages three through 15 who have been traumatized and uprooted by the storm.

The group is raising funds to offset travel expenses and the costs of housing while in New Orleans. Anyone wishing to express support and encouragement of the people of New Orleans by sending tax-deductible donations to Federated Church, P.O. Box 249, Edgartown, MA 02539, with “New Orleans Mission” as the notation on the check.
