Due to rain, students at the Edgartown School marched to the gymnasium rather than the sea Friday to celebrate a time-honored Memorial Day tradition. Mark Alan Lovewell

Rain may have impeded their march to the sea, but on Friday students at the Tisbury and Edgartown Schools ensured that a generations-old tradition dedicated to those who fought and died in war lived on. Students at both schools gathered in their respective gymnasiums to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, the Gettysburg Address and hear from veterans who have fought for the country. Flowers, traditionally tossed off Memorial Wharf in Edgartown and the Owen Park dock in Vineyard Haven, were instead gathered in the gym — a less picturesque, but no less poignant moment of remembrance.
