A storm passed over the Island Thursday, bringing heavy rain, thunder and lightning. But the storm was apparently most severe over the water. A pilot reported a water spout 10 miles northwest of the Vineyard in Rhode Island Sound, and the National Weather Service advised mariners to take shelter close to shore as the storm passed about five miles west of Aquinnah.

While the storm was severe while it lasted, it was brief. The skies cleared and there was a spectacular sunset.
