The 76 alpaca at Island Alpaca Company in Oak Bluffs get one haircut per year. Professional alpaca shearers Matt and Jozie Best and their crew travel to the Vineyard from New Hampshire — one stop of many on a New England shearing tour — to spend two days clipping and snipping the dense fleece off the animals.

Most full-grown alpacas will shear off between six and seven pounds of fleece. Angelica, a three-year-old female alpaca at the farm, produced the most fleece of anyone yesterday: 12.2 pounds, or about seven percent of her body weight. Several male alpacas, including Angelica's half-brother, Angelito, sheared off more than 10 pounds.
