President Barack Obama and the First Family will rent the bucolic Blue Heron Farm off South Road in Chilmark for their vacation during the last week of August.
The 28.5-acre property some five hundred yards down Cobb’s Hill Road, spans the Chilmark and West Tisbury town line and overlooks Town Cove, the westernmost finger of the Tisbury Great Pond.
While the mechanics of renting the property were still ongoing at press time, the Gazette has learned that a rental agreement for the farm will comprise three leases, one to be held by the Obamas, another by the Secret Service and a third by a White House entourage.
The amount of the rental has not been disclosed, but up-Island properties similar to Blue Heron Farm rent for between $35,000 to $50,000 per week.
It is understood that the Obamas have treated the transaction as a standard Vineyard summer rental, from payment terms right down to questions about bringing the family dog.
A partner in Wallace and Company Sotheby’s International Realty confirmed yesterday that the Edgartown real estate company has leased Blue Heron Farm for a block of 60 days in August and September from owners William and Mollie Van Devender, and that the company will sublease the property.
But Tom Wallace said he could not comment further.
“Wallace and Company holds a lease on Blue Heron and is in the process of subleasing it. That I can confirm. But I cannot comment on who the tenants are,” Mr. Wallace said.
But sources have confirmed that it is in fact President Obama and his family who plan to take Blue Heron Farm for the last week of August.
Unconfirmed reports have it that First Lady Michelle Obama and children Sasha and Malia may decide to come to the Vineyard a bit earlier, possibly as houseguests of Vineyard friends, before the president joins them for a quiet family vacation and rest. There are four dwellings on Blue Heron Farm property, including a white Victorian farm house, a reconstructed Pennsylvania hay barn and a Vermont shed, the latter two of which date back to the 1800s and were transported and reconstructed by West Tisbury builder Rick Anderson in the early 1990s.
Named by its previous owners, the late New York real estate developer M. Anthony Fisher and his wife Anne, the farm has undergone several renovations in the last decade. Situated overlooking a remote finger of the Great Pond, it is quiet and private, with an apple orchard, flower and vegetable gardens, stone walls, a swimming pool, golf practice tee and small basketball court for the basketball-loving president.
It is understood that Mr. Obama and his family will also be offered access to the private portion of Squibnocket Beach if they so choose.
Mr. Obama will not be the first president to set foot on the property. The Fishers played host to President Clinton and his wife Hillary in the summer of 1998. The couple held a dinner party for the Clintons and more than a dozen other guests in the barn, which measures 76 by 42 feet, with a 26-by-26-foot ell.
The Fishers were both killed in a plane crash in April of 2003.
In 2005 the property was bought by William and Mollie Van Devender for $20.35 million in what was, at the time, the second highest price paid for a single residential property in Vineyard history.
Mr. Van Devender is a timber businessman and was one of three original investors in the Vineyard Golf Club, a private course built in 2000 off the West Tisbury Road in Edgartown.
The choice of Blue Heron Farm concludes a thorough investigation of Island rental properties which began in the spring. Senior White House aides and members of the Secret Service have examined and rejected more than 20 properties.
There was an early concentration of research in Oak Bluffs where the Obamas have stayed on several occasions and have longtime friends with Island connections. But security concerns, including the potential for traffic bottlenecks that would be created by presidential travel in the bustling town, put the properties out of contention.
Blue Heron Farm is a private residential compound with easy access to the airport and to Oak Bluffs via Barnes Road.
Situated as it is off South Road, the Summer White House will be close to the West Tisbury town center, including Alley’s General Store, the town library and the farmers’ market at the Grange Hall.
In a sign of the rapid evolution of technology there has been no request for advance communications party access on the property.
During the first presidential visit of Mr. Clinton in 1993, to an Oyster Watcha Midlands home owned by former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, members of the military communications division Signal Corps descended on the property for several days to wire the location for communication prior to the president’s arrival.

WEll, isn't it nice that when a big portion of Americans are going hungry that the Obamas can spend this kind of money on a $35,000 week away. We are certianly showing them the world at its best! What is he doing as President to get this country back on track? NOTHING! He and his 'do nothing' congress has this country in worse shape than it has ever been. IMPEACH!!!

I feel with the country in such an economic downfall, the President needs to set an example and not have such extravagant vacations and spending the tax payers money on his personal hedonistic desires. Maybe, he should consider giving that $35,000 or however much it cost for this kind of a vacation to those who need it most. He continues to flit around the world, not to mention his taking Airforce I to New York for a dinner and play. Where is the balance Mr. President???

My comment is to President Obama, "you have got to be kidding me!!!" since taking office you or your wife have succeeded in spending vast amounts of taxpayers money on frivolties such as jetting to see plays to $600 for sneakers to vacation in Hawaii. What in the world are you thinking! Did the thought of having access to the peoples money go to your head, or your just not interested in the fact that the United States is in a total downward spiral. You need to rethink your priorities and fast!

I think the article was interesting, but the way AOL News presented it was so misleading, saying that The Obamas were leasing a 20Million Dollar Farm. They are one of three groups renting the place, each at $35,000 is the understanding I got from the article in the paper.

I think it is a slap in the face to the American people. There are people losing their jobs and can't pay their mortgages and losing their homes and the President of the United States is flaunting the fact that the tax payers are paying for such an extravagant vacation for him and his family. He surely is not paying for it. No wonder our country is in such a sad state of affairs , when our government officials is spending money recklessly.

I think it's an ideal setting for the First Family to unwind and enjoy their Summer vacation.
The concerns of disrupting the local Communities once again shows the regard this President has for fellow Americans that he may impose on with the security, and requirements that accompany a President anywhere he goes.

I think Mr. Obama has to learn the word BUDGET in every sense of the word. Some people are just spenders. He doesn't care, obviously, especially when it's the taxpayers money, as it has been since he took office. Give me a break. I am a working class woman who has a disabled husband and son living on social security and a pay check for usually a 3 day work week and I am behind in payments because of lost work hours because of the bad economy. The Obama vacation cost more than I make in a year. People are losing job every day and wonder where their next meal will come from. The elderly can hardly afford food and medicine, yet the Obama take 35000 dollar vacations and jet off to New York for a date night that would pay for possibly a year of food and meds. It's not pregidous but common sense that makes us wonder why.

This man has the highest stress job in the world, he deserves to have a vacation. I'm certain that President Obama is paying for this out of his own pocket, as for the aides and the Secret Service, I'm sure that's on our dime. As for everyone complaining, do your research and see how many vacations President Bush went on during his two terms and how many times he jetted back to his ranch in Crawford, TX before you continue crucifying the President.

People need to stop all the whining about what the President can do that they can't do. He Is THE PRESIDENT and deserves a little bit more than YOU. Before we all jump to a quick conclusion, let's wait for the official statement on how the vacation is being paid for. Obama has made lots of $$$'s on his two books and I am sure he can afford the 35 or 50K himself. He is smart enough to know not to create a public relations nightmare by spending taxpayer money on this trip. Assuming he's covering the cost himself, I say go for it - he works hard, he's earned it,

Where would you recommend the Obama's spend their vacation? Should they waste their days clearing brush in Texas instead (more days off than any other president in all of history?). I wonder how much Bush cost us in days off with narry a care.
However, I would imagine the Obamas could buy a property on MV Island for less than it costs to rent. But the public wouldn't allow that either. So harsh and fickle, the public is.

This just shows the arrogane of this man to take this type of expensive vacation as the nation suffers through an economic crisis. It's bad enough that his wife takes the daughters to Europe for their nirthday but this takes the prize.
I think it just proves this guy has some serious mental issues and doesn't really know how to think things through. His recent STUPID comments about the police in Cambrige back it up.
And Liberals, don't try his approach and make this an issue about race, it's purely his lack of judegment and fitness to be President.

Unlike other residents of the White House who took advantage of funds in the amount of $100,000 for redecorating their personal rooms in the WH at taxpayer expense, the Obamas paid out of pocket. Laura Bush added new "everyday" china at the WH in January 2009 at taxpayer cost of $550,000 for the Anna Waverly design. Unlike past presidents, Obama pays for his own vacations, his own furniture, & now people are screaming that he should pay for his secret service protection? Secret Service is the one that called the shots on where he is staying. Presidents work on vacation. Bush took his staff to Crawford as well-why am I not hearing screams about that?

Obviously many of the commenters can only write but not read. In the 3rd paragraph you lay out the payment arrangements, and yes, the Obamas are paying for at least part of it.
All Presidents take vacations and need to be protected while they do so. Reagan and Nixon spent a lot of time in California, and I know from personal experience that the Secret Service spent money working on Reagan's ranch there and no one complained about it at the time.
This is no different. If the Obamas can afford it, let them have their vacation.

Everyone needs a little down time. If we all read the article it specifically says that it is @ the "Obamas" expense; not of the taxpayers. We may not agree to how much it's costing; but think about it. Who determines how much we spend on our vacations? If we pick a destination, and we really want to go; we go! Right? We as a whole have to get over hatred; regardless of what or with whom. Then we can grow prosperly. We are a nation united. We all fall. If not how would we learn to stand and rise again. Our faith should be in that of the highest first. "GOD"!! He enables, loves "ALL", and is forgiving. So be blessed and above all have "Faith".

I agree with most. Many in America are going hungry and they spend 35,000 on a vacation. Let's not forget the men in uniform in Iraq and Afganistan either. He has done nothing for the common man or woman except raise taxes (like on cigarettes) soon on energy and soda. This health bill will kill the baby boomers and infants who don't have much of a chance. ARE YOU PURPOSELY TRYING TO COMPROMISE HIS SECURITY? First, I am appalled that this newspaper would convey so much information about the location of the property thereby creating security issues for his safety and that of his children. The location information is very specific. Second, your paper did not (emphasis added) expound on the exact location and cost associated with the Clinton's visit or any other political figure vacationing in the Vineyard, thank God he did not choose the Bluff surely that would have drawn criticism. Nevertheless, most Americans knew nothing about the exact location of Camp David for years, however, for some reason we all know. I hope he changes his location. Finally, need we forget, the President is a "celebrity" in his own right, in that he has secured financial deals e.g. book revenues, BEFORE becoming President. Furthermore, he is not (emphasis added) responsible for the state of this economy it was in this shape and worse before (emphasis added) his Presidency. Toward that end, if you are unemployed then obviously you do not have any "tax dollars" to pay for his vacation so get over it! Enjoy yourself Mr. President and First Lady, just choose another vacation spot! The Vineyard is not deserving of your time, money or resources.

Nowhere in this article does it state that the cost of this vacation is personally being paid for by the Obamas. THerefore I can only assume that we, the taxpayers, are footing the bill. WE NEED TO KNOW WHO is paying for their vacation along with the white house entourage and secret service. Only then can we truly voice our distaste for an expensive vacation. WE NEED TO BE TOLD, IT IS ONLY FAIR TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO KNOW HOW OUR MONEY IS BEING SPENT WHEN THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TO GO AROUND.

President Obama made over 4 million last year, most from his book sales and not his good government job as some of you seem to think, if he can afford a vacation like this, which he has to pay for,why do you care, the President has one of the most stressful jobs in the world, and it's only one week, take a look at your congress who are taking the entire month of August, and can't pass health reform, he would probably like to go else where, but can't due to security issues

The tranquillity and beauty of the finger coves is deeply restorative. And regular reunions with people important to our lives sustains us over time, over lifetimes of hard work and service. The President is allowing his children to come to an island that is familiar to them; as a parent, when I consider the upheaval in their lives, it seems like a nourishing choice. And if he and Michelle can, faced with his very unpredictable and challenging work, carve out an annual family ritual of renewal, spending time with families they've known before and will know after his service as president, I can only support it. It's too bad security concerns kept him from going back to Oak Bluffs. As for the rent, he and Michelle are the best judges of how they spend their money and whether a family vacation in a familiar place has special value. As a taxpayer, I am certainly willing to defer or forgo a measure of the some things I've hoped for if that is necessary in order to pay to keep the president of the Unites States safe. Did any of the people who write about the cost being borne by taxpayes live through the Kennedy assasinations? Do they remember THAT cost?
- Felicity Russell , Orinda CA and West Tisbury MA

The Obama's may pay the lease on the place, but the taxpayers pay for the security and the room and board of his entourage and the room and board of the secret service - not to mention the transportation.
I don't begrudge ANY president their 'vacation' (they are still working) but, I do think the honest costs should be reported for all of them. Especially since we taxpayers already provide them the retreat of Camp David.

I am glad that the president shares the same priorities I do. Family, work, and community. In these times I think it is even more important for family to spend quality time together. From what I have read it looks like it may be a working vacation for the president. It seems to me that if the Obamas were checking on payment terms and rules about bringing a family pet they are doing the same thing my family does when planning a vacation. Is it affordable? Are pets allowed? My family and I hope you have a memorable time with your family on vacation. You have a difficult job ahead of you trying to fix the huge mess that was dumped on you when you became president.

George Bush took the entire month of August 2001 off, to be in Crawford, Texas. If he had taken only a week, like President Obama is doing, perhaps he could have kept the country safe and 3000 Americans would not have died on 9/11 which happened on his watch.

Unemployment at all time highs, threat of total ruination of our health care system thanks to Zero and his minions, multiple trips around the world already, including hauling along the various aunts and cousins, and now THIS?
What a insult to the American taxpayer. If they want to go to MV, fine, but they select one of the most expensive properties on the island? And WH staff and secret service will cost a fortune as well. Even if Zero pays for his 'share,' we, the taxpayers will be ponying up all the rest of it. What's wrong with Camp David, anyway? Or just sponging off rich friends as Clinton did?

Amazing run of misinformed comments regarding the Obamas' week on the Vineyard. First and foremost, all those who are worried that the American people are footing the bill for the vacation ought to know the President is paying the rent out of his own pocket. Secret Service and other official expenses would need to paid by taxpayer money regardless of where the Presidential entourage was located. As for Obama's trips abroad, at least he is making an attempt at top level diplomacy on the international scene, something for which his predecessor never had the will or talent to accomplish.

The Obama family is paying for this vacation- NOT the taxpayers. They should have the right to stay wherever they can afford without anyone complaining. It's a great boost for the local Vineyard economy to have them staying here. Can't we just appreciate the attention/additional money their visit can bring to our cash strapped Island?

First of all, who sat back for 8 years while the economy crashed around him?
"As of April 2004, President Bush had made 33 trips to Crawford during his presidency, bringing his total to more than 230 days at the ranch in just over three years. “Add his 78 trips to Camp David and five to his family’s compound at Kennebunkport, Maine, and Bush has spent all or part of 500 days – or about 40 percent of his presidency – at one of these his three retreats.” “Bush Retreats to a Favorite Getaway: Crawford ranch,” Houston Chronicle, April 11, 2004.
Oh....I remember now the "Decider" Maybe if he had read a few newspapers and did a little work now and then we wouldn't even be commenting on this.

The Obamas can spend their money any way they choose. It's all over the press that they are paying for their own vacation.
It's tiring that everything the Obamas do is scrutinized so thoroughly. Sometimes I think you people who make these horrifying, hateful comments never realized we had presidents before... presidents who had families... took vacations... took their families on vacations... went abroad to meet with other heads of state... took their families with them when they met with other head's of state.
Times are tough, yes. They've been tough before. Did you scrutinize George Senior's every move during the recession in the early 90s?
Do you think your job is as challenging as that of the president of the USA? I seriously doubt it.
Being president is a job I do not envy. I, for one, am thrilled our president will take a vacation... take some time for himself with his family. I am sure he will come back to his job (his job which he started earlier than any other president in history) rejuvenated and continue to give it 110%.
I am also happy that when President Obama visits with foreign dignitaries he takes his family with him whenever he is able.
I am thrilled, thrilled, thrilled that we have an intellectually curious family in the White House... they seem to love the world almost as much as the world loves them!! The Obama girls are like little ambassadors and Mrs. Obama is a wonderful first lady.
Sadly (through no fault of their own), the Obamas have a lot of work to do to restore the rest of the world's faith in the USA. Much of that is done through "soft power" -- they are doing an excellent job of improving our relations with the world in this way.
President Obama and his family make me proud to be an American again. Give this family a chance. Give President Obama a chance. And, if your life isn't going well right now, I am sorry to hear that, but maybe you could put more energy into being positive and stop deriding out president... I hope things turn around for you.
I am not a blind supporter of President Obama; I do not agree with everything his does, but, ultimately I think he is a good man who has been dealt an almost impossible hand. He's doing his best to save our country.
I think it's time to ask ourselves what we can do to help Obama... what can are you doing to help save our country?
My best,
Bob

It amazes me the ignorance of the majority of those posting comments here. It has been written several times that the Obama's would be paying for their own vacation rental and not accepting any offers from anyone offering their home. It is becoming clearer to me now how Bush was elected to two terms with people like this voting.

My 401(k) has lost $35,000 in value within the past year. True, it started to decline during the Bush years, so Obama isn't entirely to blame. Still, I wish he could have chosen a vacation retreat that cost less than $35,000. Even if he is paying his own rent, his entourage and the Secret Service will be costing the taxpayers even more. He should vacation at Camp David.

They are paying for it themselves! The Obama's are definitely turning this country around and they are doing it with class. If you are unable to see that then open your ears & your mind and close your eyes; only then will you be able to see how much President Obama has already achived.

Lighten-up people. I am sure the bill is being paid by the Obamas, not the tax payer. The entourage and Secret Service are budget and are being paid regardless of where they go, so no real issue there. If you had the money, you would do the same thing. I can't afford frills, this does not make me hate the well off! They need a break, we need a break, so take a break and enjoy life.

I feel that the nation must understand one thing. Mr. Obama had nothing but his wifes salary of $575,000 3 years ago. He inherited every tax decrease you all wanted from Reagon, Bush Sr. Clinton, and the deregulation expert George Bush Jr. Clinton tanked this nation on NAFTA. Now Mr. Obama's 100 day courtship is really over. Let him have his week in the Vinyard with his family. A few more million here and there won't make a darn. It was the last FOUR (4) Presidents who tanked this nation. This guy just inherited all the problems caused by the 2 Bushes and a Clinton. Grow Up! Sincerely bigmikecraft

From someone who is on the right, and voted for McCain, I am appalled at all the negative comments about the Obama Vineyard vacation. This will be a great boost for the Vineyard economy, and our President has been working his tail off-cut him, and his family some slack, and let him enjoy his vacation. By the way, his vacation is on his dime, and his security is on our dime-sounds fair to me! God Bless America.

Helllooooooo???!!!!! The Obamas are NOT personally responsible for all of the ills in this country, nor the society in which we live. Many of the comments above aim to condemn and criticize the first family for exercising their personal right to vacation. Aside from achieving the position of US President (no easy feat), the Obamas have paid their dues (so to speak) and have worked hard to excel and achieve their scholastic, professional, and financial status. So, where they vacation as a family and how much they allocate for their personal expenses is not so much for our discussion. Heck, I would venture to say that if you had it like that, you’d probably engage at that level. Bottom line folks --- the war in Iraq, the economic state of affairs, the fact that you may (unfortunately) be without a job has nothing to do with how Mr. & Mrs. Obama chose to spend their personally earned money. No one gave it to them, they earned it. Give us a break --- get over it already and stop the bashing!!!

People need to realize this is the first family, we are the richest country in the world! A 35 thousand dollar vacation is nothing, absolutely nothing, compared with what's being spent on the military, agricultural subsidies, bank blah blah. Should we make the first family eat McDonald's like the working class? He's the freakin' President!!! He has the hardest job in the world, let him have a nice vacation.

There will be a related flood of tourist dollars that may carry many working Island families through next February and March. I'm glad he chose to support the Vineyard economy. The islandis one of the toughest places in the country to work for a living and every circulating dollar helps the local wheels keep spinning. August is insane anyway and the number of people you could "rip" for even coming always grows. Live and let live. All the "hate" is very unseemly and obviously political. Remember when Bush said "We won and we're going to act like it."? At least the man is gracious and fixing the mess we all inherited. Obamafy my brother!

The President travels with hundreds of people including dozens of security agents so he can't rent the cute little cottage down the street that costs $350 a week. For security reasons, he needs a large, totally safe property which costs a lot of money. The Secret Service would automatically reject the smaller, cheaper properties so many posters here seem to want. Also, I remember what Reagan said: "Presidents don't get vacations, just a change of scenery. The job is always there". Unlike you and me, Obama won't spend the entire vacation sleeping on a hammock while sipping Iced Tea. He'll need to be briefed every day about domestic and international situations and make executive decisions just as if he were back in Washington.

I am sure the Obamas are paying for their own vacation as they even did to redecorate the White House. Which by the way other Presidents have had the tax payers pay for it.
If the Obamas want to go to the Vineyard for their Summer Vacation why shouldn't they. If they were anywhere in the middle of town everything would be a mess not to mention how all the hard working people would feel who also paid for their vacations.
When you become president you can be sure to change things but until then, let the man and his family enjoy their lives too. Or at least as much as people will allow. I hope you have a great time Mr. President and Family!

Since 9/11 the President has a 30 mile flight restriction centered where ever he is. Martha's Vineyard isn't that big. If I recall correctly Bush set a record for most days on vacation by any president in U.S. history (in his first year). He even took the ENTIRE month of August off.
So please stop the hate and lets give Obama the time to fix the 8 year mess he was handed- dont bad mouth him for being a family man and taking some time with his family!

although I agree you should be able to take a vaction and maybe Obama is paying for it himself,it is still alot of money that tons of americans can only dream of right now. How is it fair for him to say he understands our hardships but takes a vaction, that some could never dream of even taking, when he has taking countless ones. Yes Bush took vactions as well but if you notice they were places he owned before he got in office or places like Camp David that is his. Why is it fair to get upset over Bush's vactions but it is perfectly fine for Obama to vaction. Honestly this is no way fair to get upset over one president for something he does and not get upset when other does the same thing. I dont think Bush should have taken all his vactions and i dont think Obama should be taking all his.

Obviously, "The TEA Party of NO" has, once again, decided to intentionally overwhelm this article with their sheepish comments of disparaging hate, per usual. They are not capable of engaging in any thoughtful consideration of any subject involving the President, but are merely sheep indoctrinated to blather the GOP party line on and on and on. Yawn.
In fact, the Obama family deserves this well earned summer vacation (if for no other reason than enduring the inane chatter of constant derision from such lost lemmings). Martha's Vineyard is a perfect location - particularly The Blue Heron Farm. Does anyone actually believe that the Obamas are being charged the usual rental prices? Please. It is an honor to host President Barack Obama and his family for their summer vacation on Martha's Vineyard - as most educated and coherent Americans can clearly comprehend. I do hope their time on the Vineyard is one of rest, relaxation, and peace. They certainly deserve it!

ah, how the hypocrites have come out of the woodwork. the obama family has millions of dollars at their disposal. did you honestly think they'd stay in a timeshare in kissimmee for vacation? further, the entourage that we the taxpayers pay for would have to follow them no matter where they went. at least, they're going to a home outfitted for a presidential visit -- it's not like they have family members who have multiple homes in maine, texas, and florida that we the taxpayer had to pay to get up to snuff.
also, should we not remember, we didn't only have to pay for secret service protection for bushie's endless brush-clearing expeditions, but we had to pay for secret service protection on the first daughters as they whirled through every nightclub in manhattan and every bar in austin.

I certainly hope that Michelle brings along her $5,000 purse. Surely she wouldn't be at Martha's Vineyard w/out it? Those detractors wondering about who is paying the cost might consider the 879 days GW Bush spent in Crawford and the 487 days spent at Camp David alone. (I only wish that he has spent more time on vacation.) I would suspect that the Obama vacation travel expense and security expense is being funded the same way. Bush may have stayed at his own place, but the $35,000 lease is probably the least of the expenses.

I only got done reading through about 20 of the reader comments, but I feel that someone needs to chime in and respond to the "Bush got away with extravagant vacations!" comments. The Bush family OWNS their summer home in Kennebunkport, it's a family compound (you know, similar to that of the oft noted Kennedy Compound in Hyannis). The majority of his other vacations (which were more numerous than the majority of other Presidents took in the past several decades) were to his ranch in Crawford...which he already had owned before his presidency. To make the decision to summer on a 35k/week piece of property in this economy is not sending the best PR message, and I'm sure Gibbs is coming up with some wonderful spin on it as we speak. Mr. Obama, you're always welcome to take the kiddies to North Ave. Beach right back home in Chicago, you too can cut back like the rest of us are.

Before your cast aspersions, read the article carefully. The Obamas are paying for the rental. There are three rentals; the taxpayers are mostly likely paying for the Secret Service guys and the White House group. Don't bemoan the president and his family a vacation. Obama isn't the first president to take his family on a vacation or to stay at a lovely, family spot like the Vineyard. Two weeks off with your kids--why not. Think and act with more compassion.

Well.....my opinion is that this is just craziness. Why NOT go to Camp David.....it's already paid for? Why should the American people who CANNOT even afford a 2 day getaway pay for the Secret Service and Odumdum's staff to tag along??
And on a different note.....stop bringing up BUSH!!! People, he is no longer president. Doesn't matter what he did.....Odumdum said he represented "change". Then why are all of his supporters basing his decision making skills (or lack there of) on what Bush did. I feel like I am back in grade school standing on the playground watching a bunch of kids saying "she started it!" Please people, how will we ever move forward if you keep living in the past????
As for him being black......why is that when someone has an issue with what King Odumdum says or does you keep saying....."It's because he is a black president, if he was white there would be no problem"????? I promise you this: I DON'T CARE WHAT COLOR, WHAT SEX, WHAT NOTHING OUR PRESIDENT IS----AS LONG AS HE IS DOING WHAT IS RIGHT FOR AMERICAN'S!!! HIS ONLY JOB FOR THE NEXT 3 1/2 YEARS NEEDS TO BE TO UPHOLD OUR RIGHTS THROUGH THE CONSTITUTION!!! However, it appears that people are blinded by the "glitz and glamour" of having a black president! Hello, he's black! Great, now lets move on to getting the 9.5% unemployed back to work and fix this horrible defiict he managed to blow out of control in under 6 months!!!!!
WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!! HE'S DOING DAMAGE THAT WILL TAKE GENERATIONS TO REPAIR!!!! That's what upsets people! Not that he's black, not that he doesn't deserve a vacay...I'm sure it was exhausting to blow all that money!!!!

Can any of the readers who post here read? President Obama is paying for his family's vacation with his own money. When last I checked, that is not a crime. I wonder if some of these same commenters were concerned when Bush went on vacation in Kennebunkport or Crawford? By the way that the Bush's are so wealthy that they can afford their own retreat is not impressive from a PR standpoint. This just makes Obama seem more like the common man who has pulled himself up by his bootstraps instead of inheriting daddy's money.
In either case, the Secret Service protection is paid for by U.S. citizens, regardless of whether they stay at a rental property or on their own compound.
So grow up people and stop whining. And to the Obamas, I hope the family enjoys their stay at the Vineyard. Rest and be well.

The President and the First Lady for your information have been paying for their own home makeover; not taking a dime of the allotted monies the government has provided to all the other presidents when they move in. They also pay for their children and mother-in-laws travel, food and hotel room. Unlike the other presidents and the Obama's pay for their own vacation accommodations also. If you could look beyond color in America this wouldn't be an issue nor would anything else The president does to the degree you take it. No one carried on about Bush's unprecedented time he took on vacations as oppossed to actually working. The trips to texas were paid by taxpayers too. His deficit well over 11 trillion wasn't raked over the coals and no other time in history has anyone worried about the elected president being an American until the First African-American president is elected. You Obama-haters need to check your facts. This is a private vacation to be paid by the Obamas. Security, of course, is paid by the taxpayers but that's irrelevant because they'd have security no matter how much the vacation cost. In fact, it's the same security they'd have at home so it's not costing us any extra money. Furthermore, the news reports that the Obamas are paying for the entire property, which includes housing for security.
Why the Obamas' private vacation plans are open to your criticism is beyond logic. Would the economy be any better if they only spent $100 for vaction at Disneyland? Or what if he stayed at home for vacation? The cost and location of Obama's vacation has no logical connection to the economy, politics, health care, or anything else that concerns you.
This is not a case of Nancy Reagan spending other people's money on a set of dishes. Seriously guys, think and research before you type.

You Obama haters really need to watch the news, and study recent history. First, those who use hyperbole like "Obama is the worst president ever" need only look at George W. Bush for refutation. No president has brought more shame upon the US, and no modern world leader has ever been more hated. I live near the UN, where we have hosted Arafat, Castro, Sadaam Hussein and other despots and terrorists. Yet who got the most protests? Bush. No modern leader, including Hitler, Nixon and Pol Pot, has been hated as much by the world AND HIS OWN PEOPLE.
Who can forget that Colin Powell had to cancel his visit to The Olympics because of fears of a protest? Indeed, our athletes were told not to wear any clothes with American identifiers.
If we were "defenders of freedom," and benefactors of the free world, why did the world hate us? And I'm talking about our traditional allies, including close neighbors Mexican (whose leader decided to have minor elective surgery rather than meet Bush) and Canada.
The worst hypocrisy is that Bush claimed to spread democracy yet he was asking world leaders to defy their citizens! Poll after poll showed that the world was against the war (I believe Israel, and sometimes Australia, were the only countries in favor). YET BUSH TOLD WORLD LEADERS TO IGNORE THEIR PEOPLE AND JOIN HIS ILLEGAL WAR! Ignoring citizens is Bush's idea of Democracy? Sounds more like a dictatorship to me.
Very telling of Bush's failure is the fact that more negative revelations and books have been written about him BY INSIDERS AND ASSOCIATES than any other president. These include Colin Powell, Richard Clarke AND NOW DICK CHENEY.
It is telling that a CNN International poll showed that over 80% of respondents considered Bush more of a threat to world peace than Saddam Hussein. Amazingly, this was BEFORE we knew that there were NO WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. In other words, even when the world thought that Saddam had WMDs, the vast majority of the world still thought that Bush was a bigger danger.
Finally, being a NYer, I remember the international sympathy and good will we got right after 9/11. Strangers approached me in the streets and cyberspace to express their condolences when they found out I was a NYer. Bush single-handedly changed all that into derision, making the US a pariah among the world's democracies. Search YouTube and you'll see how Americans living abroad felt proud to be Americans again after Obama won.
So before you Obama haaters exaggerate how bad Obama is, do a little research and consider the mess Bush made.

Critics of Obama spending $30k on this vacation need to study Economics 101. Those who say that he should set an example is correct -- but not in the way you think. Simply watch the news and you'd see that one of the best indicators of the economy is Consumer Spending. SPENDING IS GOOD because it gets money flowing, and that creates jobs and spurs investment. In fact, that's the whole point of Economic Stimulus: To get people to spend -- not for them to save. Even Republicans agree to that simple principle. Their approach is to do it through tax breaks but regardless, the goal is the same; increase spending so that money flows.
So yeah, Obama should set an example. And he is setting a good one by spending his own $30k on this personal vacation. C'mon, don't you Obama-bashers think before you type? Don't you watch the news? Sheesh.

WHO IS PAYING FOR THIS VACATION? WHO PAYS FOR THE PLANE TO GET THERE? WITH ALL THE SECURITY HE HAS WHY CAN'T HE FLY COMMERICICAL FLIGHTS AND PAY FOR THE TRIP LIKE EVERYBBODY ELSE. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HIM PAYING FOR HIS VACATIONS OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET. NOT THE TAXPAYERS

What a hypocrite this guy is. Obamas screams about CEOs going to vegas for a business convention or using private planes but its ok for him to go to a 50,000 a week MV mansion when HEALTHCARE is going down the tubes with his tonedeaf speeches. So sad. One term Obamy

God, don't you bother reading the news or doing a little research before you post? First of all, the person right before you, Ryan, already answered all your questions. Simply put:
The Obamas are paying for the vacation by themselves. Do you even watch the news? In fact, their $35k pay for the entire land, which includes housing for the security staff.
"WITH ALL THE SECURITY HE HAS WHY CAN'T HE FLY COMMERICICAL FLIGHTS AND PAY FOR THE TRIP LIKE EVERYBBODY ELSE. "
Do you know anything about Presidential security? Anything? Do you seriously think that he's allowed to fly commercially? Just as the President is not allowed to go out without a security team, he is also not allowed to do commercial travel, i.e. taxi. airline, subway, etc. The disruption to the airline is too great, and the risk to himself is too high. And repat: The Obamas are paying for this vacation themselves.
You don't like the rules? Well, ask congress to change them. And seriously, try reading the news online before posting somethingn pointless.

WRONG. Obama was talking SPECIFICALLY about the CEOs of companies that relied on government bailout. He did not criticize any other CEOs and couldn't care less how they spend their money. Did you hear him say anything about Steve Jobs or Bill Gates? How about hotel CEOs? Or the owners of baseball teams?d How about TV and newspaper CEOs?
Using that logic, does the Presidency depend on government bailouts? Indeed, his salary is only $400,000 -- MUCH lower than the CEOs in question. And the President gets no year-end bonuses. Or million dollar severance packages. I can safely say that Obama can easily make more as a Harvard-educated attorney in a major city like Chicago.
As for the private jet, the President is mandated by protocol to use private transportation because traveling publicly would be disruptive and risky. Duh.
So what exactly was your point? Where was the "hypocrisy"???
"but its ok for him to go to a 50,000 a week MV mansion when HEALTHCARE is going down the tubes with his tonedeaf speeches. So sad. One term Obamy"
What's sad is your inability to form a cogent argument or fact check. So what exactly is the correlation between the PRIVATE cost of his vacation and health care policy. Think about this: If his vacation was only $500 at a Holiday Inn, would health care reform fare any better? Huh? THERE IS NO CORRELATION.
Your entire post lacked any sort of point. I'd recommend a freshman course in Critical Thinking.

Well it is a tough job. So, tough a vacation after 6 months? A, between 35 and 50 thousand dollar vacation? Not to mention the cost of security add it all up and Airforce One. In our current economical situation Mr. President, perhaps you should have pitched a tent in the rose garden? Every person I know would love to have these perks, many would love to have a job that gives you a week every 6 months and, let's go low, 30,000 dollars. Good gig! America's failing while you vaction Mr. President!
