Originally named Cottage City, the symbol of Oak Bluffs is a hidden area just steps from Circuit Avenue marked by circles of closely-built, brightly-colored gingerbread cottages. The cottages, built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, replaced tents used during religious revivals popularly held in that era. Today owned and managed by the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association, the Camp Ground is a unique, old-fashioned enclave occupied primarily by summer residents. The iron Tabernacle in the center of the Camp Ground has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
