Welcome Guide Fall

Off-season on Martha's Vineyard has its own charms. The Island is quieter now. The white sand beaches are largely empty, and leaves that created a soft green canopy in the summer have turned yellow and orange and begun to fall. Nature seems to reassert itself. Birds headed south for the winter stop over in marshes and fields. In the Great Ponds, shellfishermen dressed in waders harvest scallops the way their grandparents taught them. The crowds are gone, but art galleries, shops and many restaurants remain open, and harvest time brings the bounty of the Island's many farms.
