Ten-Year-Old Wins VFW Fluke Tournament

One hundred and thirty anglers participated in the 14th annual Martha’s Vineyard Fluke Derby last weekend, but the biggest winner of all was herself pint-sized. Ten-year-old Molly Mention of Vineyard Haven was named grand prize winner with her catch of a 9.47 pound fluke.

Big Fish, Bigger Winners at Kids' Trout Derby

Scarlet Pangia, age two and a half, and her father Jonathan were at Duarte's Pond off Lambert's Cove Road before five in the morning on Saturday. But they weren't alone; any good trout fisherman knows the fish can start biting before the sun rises. Some families arrived before 4 a.m., armed with Thermoses full of coffee. Some youngesters, like Emmy Carroll, arrived still in their fleecy pajamas.

Once Again, Vineyard Message in Bottle Floats Its Way to Devoted Derby Angler

Eat your heart out, Nicholas Sparks.

Derby angler Janet Messineo last week found her second message in a bottle from an Island student.

Mr. Sparks’s popular novel by the same name about true love found by a woman who finds a message in a bottle may not be the stuff from which award-winning striped bass are found, but the derby weigh-in station was abuzz Sunday morning when Ms. Messineo popped in with a carefully sealed Snapple bottle enclosing a note.

On Home Stretch, Fishing Derby Hits Final Familiar Fever Pitch

One is a magic number as the 62nd annual derby enters its final day of an event with big numbers, bountiful fishing and a short ride through controversy.

Show Up, Winners

Show Up, Winners

Martha Smith, major domo of the derby weigh-in stations, has issued a call to winners to show up at the weigh-in. “We need to remind daily and weekly winners to come in and pick up their prizes,” she said, noting that prizes are available immediately at the end of competition each week.

Lucky line for Janet Messineo on Bluefish Saturday

Today is bluefish Saturday. Participating fishermen have an opportunity to win $500 if they catch the biggest fish today in a boat, and there is another $500 for the angler who catches the biggest bluefish from the shore.

Stocks of Striped Bass Healthy, But Still the Fishermen Worry

The striped bass is fun to catch and good to eat. It’s also enigmatic, historically prone to wild fluctuations in numbers and to inexplicable disappearances from area waters. And with the annual Island fishing derby opening Sunday, the old question is being asked again: where are all the fish?

Cooper Gilkes 3rd, an Island fisherman for more than 50 years and the owner of Coop’s Bait and Tackle in Edgartown, is concerned, for catch numbers seem to be in sharp decline.

At 85, Don Mohr Knows Where All the Fish Are

On the eve of the start of the 63rd annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby a cadre of friends gathered to celebrate a derby birthday. Don Mohr, 85, of West Tisbury, was honored by his friends and wife at a party at his home on Otis Bassett Road.

Their fish lines not yet in the water, derby anglers gathered for sandwiches and beverages and to share stories with Mr. Mohr, who was chairman of the derby from 1989 to 1991 and derby committee member from 1984 to 1991.
