Patricia Faust Sayre of Vineyard Haven died on Oct. 4 in Boston following treatment at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for a brief illness. She was 75.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert R. Faust of Woodbury, Conn., she prepared at Elgin Academy in Elgin, Ill., and was a member of the class of 1959 at the University of Connecticut where she began a lifetime membership in Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
Mrs. Sayre moved to the Vineyard from Westport, Conn., in 1970, becoming a pioneer teacher in the Head Start preschool established on the Island during the Johnson administration. She later worked at Martha’s Vineyard Travel, Avenue To Travel and Eurosport Tours where she made many Island friends. An avid gardener, she was a longtime member of the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club. Having settled in West Chop, she played tennis at Tommy Rabbit’s courts with Islanders Peggy Jackson and Kathy Lang Donaldson who soon became companion players on the adult tennis camp circuit. In later years, her camaraderie with West Tisbury skiers in bright parkas, Karin Stanley and Eleanor Stanwood, led to the formation of the “skiing jellybeans” who brightened the slopes of Stowe, Vt., and North Conway, N.H.
Her community involvement included service on the Grace Church Episcopal Altar Guild and trustee board of the Vineyard Haven Public Library. Her love of skiing, fostered by long stays in St. Anton, Austria, provided her with many sportive friends on two continents. An active committeewoman, she volunteered for more than a decade in fund-raising for the Nathan Mayhew Seminars celebrity tennis tournament. In the 1990s, Mrs. Sayre founded Nostalgia Ltd. Handcrafts which sold at the Tisbury Women’s Co-operative, Island shops and throughout New England as far north as Zeb’s General Store in North Conway, N.H. When not traveling the world in retirement, she was devoted to her grandchildren and home gardening.
She had been married to the late Woodrow Wilson Sayre of West Chop, and is survived by her companion, Bruce E. Doten of Vineyard Haven; son Jeffrey Redington Sayre and daughter in law Dawn Sayre of Oak Bluffs and their children Jack and Julia. She is also survived by her daughter Elizabeth D.M. Badaracco, son in law John Badaracco, and their children Alexander and Hailey, of Framingham.
Following cremation, a memorial service is planned this fall at Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven on Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. Those wishing to remember Pat are invited to make contributions in her name to the Polly Hill Arboretum, P.O. Box 561, West Tisbury, MA, 02575.
