They're creepy, spooky, and in some cases downright impressive. Scarecrows are popping up in front of storefronts this week, part of the Martha's Vineyard Public Charter School's annual Island-wide contest. Anyone, from professional artists to schoolchildren, is invited to craft a scarecrow based on a literary theme, with one participant randomly selected to win an iPad. The contest also doubles as a fundraiser for the school; businesses pay a small fee to display scarecrows outside their stores.
