Master Swimmers Compete in New England Championship

In March, four of the Martha’s Vineyard masters swim team made the journey to Harvard’s Blodgett pool for two weekends of competition at the New England Short Course Yards Championships. More than 770 swimmers from every New England state and as far away as California competed; 48 New England and three National records were set.

Vineyard Swimmer Places in National Masters Meet

Les Cutler of West Tisbury, a member of the Mansion House Masters Swim Team of Vineyard Haven, competed at the U.S. Masters Swimming National Championship meet held at the University of Texas Swim Center in Austin, Tex., in early May.

Masters Swimmers Go the Distance

This has been a busy fall and winter for the Martha’s Vineyard Masters Swim Club. Four members of the team competed in the New England Short Course Yards championship meet held in Harvard’s Blodgett Pool on March 12, 18, 19 and 20. This is the largest masters meet in New England with over 850 swimmers competing. Masters teams from all of the New England states as well as New York, New Jersey, the eastern seaboard and several other parts of the country ranging from Florida to the Pacific Northwest were there.

Vineyard Swimmers Compete in Italy

Three Vineyard swimmers swam for Team USA and the New England Masters Swim club at the FINA World Masters Swimming Championships in Riccione, Italy from June 3 to June 17. The competition brought together from around the world more than 12,000 masters division pool and open water swimmers, water polo players, divers and synchronized swimmers.

Elite Swimmers Compete Across the Pond

Four members of the Martha’s Vineyard masters swim team traveled to the Boston University aquatics and athletic center for the 2011 New England short course metres swim championships in December. The meet saw several New England and national records set. Nearly 400 swimmers from all over the country competed. Leslie Craven and Les Cutler swam the 800-metre freestyle. Leslie was second in the women’s 50 to 54-year-old age group (11.07.29), while Les was third in the men’s 65 to 69-year-old age group (16:48.72).
